So we all know that Target is an LGBT friendly company. Although public figures such as Caitlyn Jenner and Laverne Cox may have sparked the conversation, I don’t believe this decision 100% caters to the transgender community. Instead, it caters to EVERYONE.
When you think about it, a lot of toys stem from old time gender roles which aren’t as relevant today. For example, dolls were for girls so they could get use to staying at home taking care of the kids. Toy soldiers were for boys because men were in the military before women had that right. Those are just a couple of examples.
Today, men AND WOMEN are breadwinners. Mother’s AND FATHER’S need basic skills to take care of their children. Women now serve in the military. All these real life responsibilities were once delegated to you based on your gender. In my opinion, since our roles and responsibilities in society have shifted, it’s actually a progressive idea to reflect this social change in children’s toys. Wasn’t the original idea behind “toys” to prepare children for adulthood?
In addition to Target’s idea to blend the toy section, they have decided to blend the kids bedding area. They have also stated that they have received complaints about apparel. With that being said, I hope they don’t go as far as blending boys and girls clothing. That may be a bit TOO extreme.
