SAD NEWS: DC Attorney/Gay Rights Advocate Found Dead in the Dominican Republic


On Thursday, October 30th, D.C. Attorney Van Teasley, 55, was found strangled and gagged to death in his Dominican Republic vacation apartment. The motives of his death are still unknown, however according to officials, his door was left open when police arrived to the scene and it didn’t appear to be forced open.

While having attended Howard University, Teasley was extremely active in the gay community. According to, he provided legal representation to low-income gay and transgender clients while he also worked on court-appointed cases in the DC Superior Court.

“In 2008, Teasley testified before a City Council committee on the issue of hate crimes targeting LGBT people in the District. He called on city officials and D.C. police to more aggressively address hate crimes against all people.”
