Music Icon, Patti LaBelle, appeared on Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen” this week alongside Sam Smith. During her conversation with Andy, he asked her about her relationship with Luther Vandross and if he struggled with the idea of “publicly coming out.”

This isn’t too surprising at all. Many of us can relate to him not wanting to disappoint his family–more specifically, his mother. Aside from that, having a career in an industry that revolves around fans is a LOT of pressure. There is a constant need to keep your fans happy because at the end of the day, your fans are the people who are allowing you to pay your bills.
This makes me think of a question that I pose on here every so often–in 2017, going into 2018, is it easier to be openly gay/bisexual in the mainstream music industry? Socially, how far have we come and how much further do we have to go?
