I finally made time to watch Issa Rae’s HBO newly hit series, Insecure. After hearing so many great reviews about it, I had to see what was so great about it. Needless to say, I was hooked after the first episode!
Insecure follows the lives of Issa Dee (played by Issa Rae) and her best friend Molly Carter (played by Yvonne Orji) as they take us through a series of realistic experiences that black women face in dating and in the workplace. Although a lot of humor was worked into the story line, by the final episode I was all caught up in my feelings. I felt every emotion that Issa, her boyfriend Lawrence (played by Jay Ellis), and Molly had gone through.
What I love about Insecure is how realistically the experiences were played out on camera. Also, the connections between the characters felt extremely natural. Spoken from someone who has listened to many testimonies over the years from black women, I can say that this series told NO lies.
Issa Rae stopped by The Breakfast Club about a month ago and expressed how she wanted to portray black women as being vulnerable and “regular.” She goes on talk about how although in today’s era black women are portrayed as being “flawless, fierce, magic…etc,” there has never really been an outlet that shows exactly what black women go through to build themselves up to that point. Hence, this is where the title of the series comes into play, Insecure.
