I didn’t believe it when I first read the headline on remezcla.com, but it is true. After the series premiere of Love & Hip Hop Miami, people took to social media to voice their concerns about the Latina Superstar, Amara La Negra’s, complexion.
If you recall, during the first episode she had a bit of a run in with Music Producer, Young Hollywood. He mocked her as she spoke about her pride for her African and Latino roots and also went on to suggest that she could not be “elegant” or “breathtaking” while wearing her hair in an afro.
What an asshole, right? smh
Not only did Amara face (no pun intended) this type of ignorance from cast members, but from viewers as well. Check out a few tweets below:
Amara la Negra looks like a white woman in blackface.

I don’t know what it is about Amara La Negra, but for some reason she looks like a white person in blackface to me.

The good thing about this is that a conversation is being had that has been long overdue!
Honestly this season is correcting my ignorance. After seeing pictures of Amara La Negra I thought it was a black face situation, didn’t know Latina’s like her existed. We learn every day #LHHMIA

We tend to learn through what we see and the fact that an Afro-Latina is casted on a popular show like the one she’s on, “Love & Hip Hop,” could do wonders in regards to educating people on where brown people are in the world. We aren’t necessarily as much of a minority group as we’ve been told…
